As you're wintering along, we hope you find time to sit down someplace peaceful, beautiful and/or energizing, with a cup of something hot and delicious, and take a moment to breathe, drink and be.

It's easy to get caught up in the rush of life, the things that need to get done, the places you need to be and the people who need your attention. That's not going to change. But it can be put on hold for ten minutes while you sit and leisurely make your way to the bottom of a cup of hot cocoa. Those ten minutes that you claim for yourself, during which you allow your mind to wander and your cell phone to be silent, can pay off healthy dividends for the rest of the day. Consider making the investment!

Letters from the Front

We read all sorts of reports in the news about what's going on in Israel, but hearing stories from the people who live there offers not only a different perspective, but a more personal and immediate connetion to the country and the people living in it.

Following is an excerpt from a recent email I received from a friend who lives near Jerusalem: I just wanted to send a little report of how things are in Israel with all of the attacks that you have been hearing about. Day to day life is business as usual but there are little things that we do differently. [read on...]

Sleep While You Can

Until you have been without sleep for several months in a row, it's difficult to appreciate the power of a good night's sleep. I know people laugh at me and say, "Wait 'til you actually have kids," but in the meantime I'll take as much sleep as I can get and I never slept as well as I did with the Back 'N Belly Body Pillow.

It supports your front and back and accomodates you as you move around. It does take up most of the bed, but I think everyone in my family agrees that my significantly reduced level of crankiness is worth it. [read on...]

Meaty Mushroom Barley Soup

Hot and satisfying, a good soup can restore your health and mood on the coldest of days, arming you with renewed strength and energy. The following recipe is one of my favorite winter soups and is certainly hearty enough to be considered a meal in and of itself. The best soups are made with the best ingredients, so look for the freshest vegetables and the leanest flanken you can find, and don’t forget to freeze a container to warm up a cold night to come.

White mushrooms can be used exclusively in this soup, but a combination of mushroom varieties will add more depth of flavor. Cremini and/or baby bella mushrooms are wonderful choices in addition to the white mushrooms.

Jeweled Rice

The rich colors of this dish create a jewel-like effect—the rice, tinted bright yellow by the turmeric, serves as a backdrop for the golden orange carrots and ruby red currants. It makes a brilliant side dish for plain grilled chicken or fish. For a fancy roast chicken, cook the Jeweled Rice and then use it to stuff the chicken (by placing it in the chicken cavity) before baking.
